As someone trying to break into an industry, whether it is sport, recreation, tourism or hospitality, making connections with people in the same position that you aspire to be in is essential. Networking doesn’t have to be an awkward and challenging task. With the help of social media outlets (like Twitter and LinkedIn), it has become much easier to make an introduction and a lasting connection with professionals. This makes it very important for you to establish yourself and your brand. Your social media brand should represent how you want to be portrayed within the industry. Just remember: if you don’t take yourself seriously, no one else will. Engaging in conversations on social media sites will not only show your presence, but also let others know that you are serious about the profession.

Twitter may be the best way to let someone know that you are “listening”. In fact, it was because of my communication with various industry professionals (through social media sites) that I was able to assist with events and gain additional experience as a planner. Students have the advantage, because once you have established a general (cyber) relationship with an industry professional, you can then extend yourself to gain hands-on experience by shadowing or volunteering for their company during events. This builds a rapport between you and the industry professional. Not all professionals with-in the industry will be available or as accessible as others, but don’t be afraid to make the connections with those who are. It’s no longer about whom you know or what you know, but more about how you are getting involved!

So is your Net...working?

~~ Happy Networking!!

Zalika
Subscribe in a reader

Equality: “I DO!”

In the summer of 2011, there was a rebirth to the NY wedding industry. Wedding planners are not only sought after by excited and eager soon-to-be brides, but also soon-to-be same sex couples looking to get married. The focus of weddings have evolved from the traditional bride and groom, to (now in six states) bride and bride and groom and groom. This cultural change of how society identifies and acknowledges “husband and wife” has taken the wedding industry into a new and exciting realm. When New York legalized same sex marriages the feeling was as if the wedding industry had been liberated but no bra was burned! Instead society has burned and is continuing to dismantle the image of inequality. With New York being the sixth state to recognize same sex marriages, it is only a matter of time until society continues to influence legislation and all states acknowledge these same sex unions.

So what do same sex marriages mean for the wedding industry, specifically in the Philadelphia region? Will it boost company’s client base, revenue, market? The answer is yes! Same sex couples will no longer be confined within the “life partners” category. The Philadelphia LGBT community would be able to seek wedding professionals to guide, design, and coordinate even more weddings that will positively affect (the already) billion dollar industry. The more time progresses, the more states will remove their barriers of inequality and exclusion especially for an industry who celebrates unions and for a city who “Loves you back”.

To the LGBT community: the industry encourages you to say “I Do!”

Happy Planning from ZalGuya Occasions!
Subscribe in a reader

Am I My Brother’s Keeper?

For Hospitality Companies – The answer is YES I AM!

In 2011, Social Responsibility is not a new term. Many companies are doing more when it comes to providing a product or service. Social Responsibility within a service industry means that companies are investing more into their community and the environment around them. These investments stem from companies reducing their carbon footprint, having horticultural involvement (planting trees, being active in park reservation, etc.), and building a bond within their community. Community bonds could mean being active at the local soup kitchen, encouraging reading amongst young school children or even providing shadowing opportunities for high school students who could be potential employees.

Companies are taking greater responsibility in the way they operate their business and their involvement within the community. This process is not only good for the community but it also benefits the business. Company’s like Wish Upon a Wedding is a great example of being socially responsible in the hospitality industry. The company’s main objective is to provide weddings for people who are terminally ill or have life-altering situations. The non-profit organization is compiled of various vendors and planners worldwide. Event planners, like Mark Kingsford (who is the owner of Queen of Hearts Wedding Consultants and the president of the Philadelphia Chapter of Wish Upon a Wedding) deems it important to be involved in providing weddings that may not be able to happen under “normal” circumstances and at no cost. Wish Upon A Wedding is just one example of a company being socially responsible. There are many more within our industry that are going a step further and doing more in becoming proactive in supporting our planet and its people.

A socially responsible company creates socially responsible employees (or so one would hope). Employees become knowledgeable about their surroundings and can have a sense of pride for their company. In my opinion, being socially responsible helps companies build employee morale. With the many ways that a company can strain a neighborhood and environment, companies that take the time and make the effort to offset its negative effects by making positive implications in their community is very important. Whether the business is a hotel chain, event company, or restaurant; the need to maintain a socially responsible brand and objective will be important for years to come.

So when the question is asked: AM I My Brother’s Keeper? – companies in the hospitality industry can definitely respond by saying: YES I AM!
Subscribe in a reader

Kevin Murph, Jr. Graduation Event

I wanted to share some images of the decor from our client's graduation event held on May, 21, 2011. It was the most talked about and covered wedding (I think) since Princess Diana and Prince Charles. Everyone was speculating what Kate would wear, what the cake will look like, who would be there, her ring...and the list goes on and on.

There were soo many details and elements in the wedding that were stunning like Kate in her dress (simply beautiful and elegant), the Gorgeous Church (I love buildings with character and it was huge!), cutie pie Prince William, those beautiful green trees that added a touch of life to the scenery, and my personal favorite..... THOSE HATS!
I simply adored many of the guests hats, especially Camilla's, the Duchess of Cornwall.

I think the States should incorporate this trend and make it a tradition, sort of like women wearing hats on Easter. Ladies let start wearing hats to weddings!! It gives a statement and it adds excitement and color to the occasion. Women can get as creative as they wish (as you can see from the Royal Wedding). It would also be great to see the livelihood from having that hats in pictures!! It give us a reason to really out do ourselves, think out the box, really come dressed for the occasion!

I'm stuck and in love with the idea of hats being worn at wedding ceremonies now. It was exciting to me .....was I the only one???? Lol

Well, whatever your favorite moment was from the Royal Wedding, remember that in the mist of it all it was a celebration of LOVE. Let's spread love throughout our community and make everyday as special and grand as the Dutch and Duchess of Cambridge's Royal Wedding.

Peace and Love.

And as always,

Happy Planning!!

-Zalika

Subscribe in a reader

...Bottom line....How MUCH will it cost??

This is a question that I (and I'm sure every planner) gets asked from anyone who is unsure about hiring a planner for their Occasion. It seems that people who ask this question believe that they can get a clear cut answer right then and there on the spot. But frankly, it's not that simple.

There are many aspects and details that goes into quoting a price for my services. It all depends on what you need from me and how much you need me to be involved during the planning of your Occasion and the day of the Occasion and the scale of your event.

It is best to take the time to (first) know what it is that you want out of a planner and know the basic details of your Occasion (date, time, area if not location desired, purpose for you Occasion) before you set up an appointment for an initial meeting. This will allow you to be ready to provide the necessary information to me so that I can then 1) see how I can provide services 2) accurately quote you the price for my services.
I see so many times where people flip flop and are unsure about their needs prior to planning and during the planning phase of their Occasion and the ending results leads to them asking for services that were not initially covered under our agreement. This leads to additional fees.

Once you know what you want from my services and your event, then you should decide and factor in how much you can afford to pay for these services. This should be included in you budget for your Occasion. People seem to not always realize the fact that a planners fees is an expense to the Occasion. This way your time will not be wasted and the planners time will not be wasted if you know off the bat, you cannot afford the services.

It is also important to remember that the more involved you need your planner for your Occasion, the more their services will cost. It is always an option to hire your planner for the day of your Occasion. This allows for you to sit back and relax without worry or stress during the day of your Occasion.

This is why we say that ZalGuya Occasions allows YOU to be a "Guest at your Occasion"!

So get back to what truly matters and leave the planning to us.

Happy planning!

- Zalika W.
Subscribe in a reader

ZalGuya's tips to finding the RIGHT venue for your Occasion

ZalGuya Occasions offers many services including a Venue Locating Service, which is designed to do all of the leg work for you and make sure that your venue is the RIGHT venue for your occasion. When going on a site visit or inquiring about a venue for your occasion, it is important to gather as much information as possible BEFORE you sign a contract. Some important questions should include:

o What is the rental price?
o How many hours are covered under the rental price?
o Is there a security deposit required in addition to the rental price
(refundable/non-refundable)? What is the security deposit for?
o What is the amount due to secure the venue/hall/space on your desired date?
o Is your date available at the hours you would need for your occasion?
o What is the maximum capacity for desired rental hall/space?
o Is on-site catering required?
o Is off-site catering allowed (additional fee for off-site catering, insurance
requirements)?
o Is there parking on premises available?
o Is liquor allowed on premises (if not provided)?
o Is audio/visual equipment available on premises? Is there an additional fee to use
the A/V equipment?
o Where are the restrooms? And are they easy to access?
o If there is any construction or renovation in progress make sure in writing that
the renovations will be complete before your Occasion's date.

These are just some questions that can you can ask when finding your venue. Some aspects of the venue may not be important to you or necessary to have for your occasion. For instance, if you are having an occasion that does not require the use of A/V equipment than this question could be avoided. Or if you have guests who require a ramp for entry, this is something you would want to make sure that the venue you are selecting has.

It is also important to make sure if your venue will provide tables and chairs. Do not just assume that tables and chairs will be provided. Also, make sure they have the type of tables that you would like for your occasion (whether they are round tables or rectangle tables). You definitely want to make sure that the venue has enough tables and chairs for the amount of guests that will be at your occasion.

When looking at a venue, you also want to look at the decor, paint color, the condition of the interior (walls, fixtures, doors, windows, etc). For instance, I recently did a site visit in the Multicultural room at the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP). This is a wonderful venue to have an occasion. It is filled with history, easily accessible (especially for out of town guests) and can accommodate up to 80 guests. Currently the decor on the wall is black and white pictures of monumental periods in history. These pictures will change with new feature at the museum. However there are some occasions that might not be a great fit for this venue. So depending on what you are looking for, your budget and your occasion’s needs this could be the venue for you. Below are some images that I took during my site visit. As you can see there is a stage and available A/V equipment.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 191px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mSP0QIf9F1Q/TX1r0owdNTI/AAAAAAAAAlw/Bf8X6RTzI5o/s320/AAMP%2B1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583737665047311666" /> <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 191px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bXW-r0PT3nk/TX1sYD6rsOI/AAAAAAAAAl4/hmJSqodHg7o/s320/AAMP%2B3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583738273633382626" />

Another venue that I visited was the old North by Northwest, now called the 7165 Lounge in Philadelphia. This is a unique venue where they have on-premise catering. Some of the images that I took are not as clear as I would have liked, but you can get the idea. However there are some occasions that might not be a great fit for this venue. So depending on what you are looking for, your budget and your occasion’s needs this could be the venue for you. Check out some pictures below:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 191px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zH0p0zvMR-8/TX1vaDXFEhI/AAAAAAAAAmE/EWJwzaadj60/s320/New%2BNorth%2Bby%2BNorthwest%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583741606378672658" /> <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 191px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tzunkGBkfSE/TX1wHo2-cCI/AAAAAAAAAmM/C51W92ALoSA/s320/New%2BNorth%2Bby%2BNorthwest%2B3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583742389538680866" />

Your venue should complement your event. Another tip is to make sure that your occasion complements your color scheme and not stick out like a sore thumb. There can be a lot involved when researching venues and selecting venues. So it is important to contact an event professional (if you are deciding to find your venue on your own) and see if you can be provided with a list of important questions to ask during your search. Another option is to Google some important questions or a check list of important elements that a venue should have for your occasion. Also do your research on a venue. Ask around to see if people you know had an occasion at the venue of your interest before. Make sure you visit the venue, in person. Every venue sounds wonderful on the phone and on their website, but going to see the venue in person will be essential for you to visualize your occasion in that space and will confirm if that venue is the RIGHT venue for your occasion.

Happy Planning!!

Zalika Woods
Subscribe in a reader

So I was looking @ADMagazine_EIC LINKEDIN profile and he had under contact "FEEL FREE" and I just wondered do we really feel free? Really being. Really existing. Really being free!! Laugh more, cry often, love unconditionally and forgive and forget easily. Don't be afraid to be who it is you want to be. So just in case you are not familiar with with Wawa or the Taste of Philadelphia I will share some brief info (which you can find more in detail at Wawa.com). Wawa <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 173px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hX7_W6Y_20w/TDIZDVTLgDI/AAAAAAAAAlM/KvwyMB7z2KQ/s400/photo_about.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490478440765947954" /> (image from wawa.com) is a family store selling various products like coffee, breakfast sandwiches, subs, chips, donuts, etc. They are also known for their gas stations. Wawas are located mainly on the East Coast with a few reaching as far down as Virginia. Wawa prides itself on serving the community and being a convenience to its community at a low reasonable price. Wawa became a new title sponsor for the Welcome America Festival in Philadelphia and became Wawa Welcome America!

Taste of Philadelphia is one of many events throughout the 11 days of celebrate of Independence day here in Philadelphia. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 152px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hX7_W6Y_20w/TDIZ6w3fh9I/AAAAAAAAAlU/WCc5FPuqP1I/s400/taste-of-philadelphia.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490479393058818002" /> (image from welcomeamerica.com/taste-of-philadelphia) The Taste of Philadelphia is a three day event that started on Friday June 25th and ended on Sunday June 27th. It is a free event that has various restaurants throughout the city of Philadelphia that come and offer some items from their menus at a very reasonable price. There are also free concerts and activities and fireworks that the whole family can enjoy. This event is held at Penns Landing Water Front (which allows you to view the Ben Franklin Bridge and Camden, New Jersey).

This was my first time experiencing this event and volunteering at an event like this. I was a greeter during this event on the opening day, Friday and Saturday. My task was to have a warm smile and say "Welcome to the Taste of Philly!" and pass out maps and the calendar of events for the 11 day festival. I was so good at it ABC6 news taped me! But I have yet to see it so if anyone knows where I can find it please send me the link!!! (Ham..i know!) However, I had a a great time and experience to sort of see the ends and outs of this event. Upon entry there were security and myself (along with another volunteer) to greet you. The securities job was to check all bags (even purses). They were looking for any illegal contraband, weapons and alcohol (which was not allowed due to a vendor, Coors Lite selling beer). Some people seemed to get agitated by that fact that they were being searched upon entry. Over all the process went as smooth as it could for two security guards at a main entrance and exit.
So I would say one important aspect of creating a free public event would be to have an ample security team. Those who are alert, quick thinkers and knowledgeable about the event.

There was more attendees on Saturday than Friday. I would guess because of people not having to work on Saturday and the Taste of Philadelphia only lasted a few hours on Friday. However once you entered you had so many options: if you wanted to partake in the food tasting you would need to purchase tickets (the amount of tickets depended what restaurant you wanted to patronize and what/how much you wanted to get), there were many companies playing games and giving out information (which was free - companies like Welcome America, Verizon, etc.), there were kids activities on Saturday and the cast from the Last Air Bender and so much more. Oh did I forget entertainment and fire works! There were various local acts performing. I am not too sure if there was a written line up of the acts for people who might wanted to highlight the name if they liked a performer or see who was coming up next, however that would have been a nice addition.
So another good thing to have when creating a free public event would be entertainment! It keeps your audience with something to do, even when they may not be able to make certain purchases. Free entertainment, good free entertainment is really important to draw a crowd. It also helps new artists get on the scene locally.

Now one thing that I did notice or was brought to my attention was that the Taste of Philadelphia was advertised as a FREE event, however when you entered you had to purchase tickets to basically "Taste Philly". Some thought that everything was free and I had to inform them that entrance is free and the entertainment was free however to partake in the food sampling there was a cost. Some were fine and others were unhappy with the "false advertisement".
So the next point I would say that would be helpful in creating a free public event would be to advertise clearly and precisely what your audience is required to do and what they are getting for what you are giving. This helps reduce the amount of unhappy event goers or at least helps reduce the many times volunteers have to hear about it. :O)

The end of the day on Saturday there were fire works!! Now who doesn't love fire works right!!! (especially over water) The fire works came with a chance to win some prize. You were instructed (before the fireworks began) to listen out for key words and write on a piece of paper that was handed out how many times you heard those words. The only thing that went wrong with this (from my eyes) is that when it was time to collect the cards (which was upon leaving) I don't think no more than a quarter of people saw the two ladies holding the boxes for the cards. It was a mass of people leaving all at one time and there wasn't (initially) a sign making it known that those ladies were collecting the cards. I really wonder how many they did collect.
So my last point would be to have a less chaotic contest and a clear indication on who should receive and/or where the items should be dropped off.

Of course it takes a whole lot more than the few points I mentioned to create a free public event, but these are just some things to think about for when you do get started. So good luck on your planning this fabulous free event and let us know about it so we can volunteer!!!

Until next time, Happy Planning!
-Zalika
Subscribe in a reader

Breakfast at Tiffany's Bridal Shower

My cousins and I did an Bridal Shower for our soon to be cousin Anna! I recently wrote about our logo and the criticism that I received regarding our name not being readable. So I contacted Charlotte Markward from CMarkward Designs to help me improve my logo! She taught me the important aspect of a logo that is recognizable and can be sized easily without loosing the image. So check out our new logo and let me know what you think. It's simple but I love it. It's just what I pictured and displays who we are... Help me Pick!

Date: June 6, 2010

So I decided to re-vamp my website, logo, and ZalGuya Occasions as a whole (including my bio pic). Friday, June 4, 2010 I had a photo shoot with Michael Knight of MKnight Photography. Mike and I had a great time talking about high school, life and our businesses. The shoot was so fun and relaxing I didn't realize that he took so many pictures. So I knew this summer I wanted to give my website a make over and revamp our logo. I have started by taking the most important step and contacting a professional! Charlotte Markward with CMarkward Design was exactly who I needed to help me move in the right direction in perfecting my logo.

So we are no where done with bringing MY vision to life, but so far she has bought so oo much knowledge to constructing a simple logo that I never knew before. I quickly found out that it wasn't just as simple as I thought. I thought I could find a picture of what I was looking for and then the master can create! But of course this was not it. I needed to look at the size, the marks, the colors, the....EVERYTHING! The more and more I talk to Charlotte, the more and more I realize I know NOTHING!!! Which is great! Because that means I can learn and absorb ALL that Charlotte and CMarkward Designs teaches me! I assure you by the end of this... I will not only have an AWESOME logo, but some knowledge on what makes an AWESOME logo!

Stay tuned to the unveiling of it all at the end of the summer!
Subscribe in a reader

Our BMDS Experience

Date: May 23, 2010

On Saturday, May 15, 2010, ZalGuya Occasions, LLC volunteered at the Black Male Development Symposium (BMDS) which was held on Arcadia University's campus. This event was a huge success. BMDS is a symposium that reaches 1,000s of attendees in efforts to shape, encourage, support, and guide our young African American males and us (adults who have a hand in raising and guiding them). Although the majority of attendees are African American there are also Latino males and other minority groups in attendance. Throughout the Symposium there are many workshops for elementary school, high school, college, and adults that provide a stage for developing dialogue on different topics concerning our youth and topics on how to take back control in raising our youth.

This Symposium reaches people from all over the United States and brings professionals that conduct workshops from all over as well. As a volunteer, I was able to see first hand (and behind the scenes) how many people truly believe in what the staff at BMDS are doing in sowing into our community by traveling far and wide to win back our young men. I was able to greet attendees as they entered into the Kuch Gymnasium and act as a monitor for a morning and afternoon workshop. The workshops were (hands down) the highlight of my BMDS experience. The morning workshop that I was assigned had an audience of high school (15-18 year olds) and a few scattered adults. The morning workshop I was in was conducted by Jeffrey Weaver and his workshop was titled "RU Actin' White or Swagger Tite". Jeffrey Weaver opened a forum that poised questions on how "real" we are being in our society, within ourselves and to our youth. Also on how we are connecting with our youth and reaching our youth in "their" way of understanding. The audience and teens in the session were open to the dialogue and discussion and in some form touched on where the bridge has been broken from the older generation (Baby Boomers) and the younger generation (Generation Y). This was an excellent way to begin my morning (personally) and it actually led and set the tone to my afternoon session that I monitored titled "Holla Back- Holla Black- Holla @ Ya Boy" conducted by Justin Wooley.

Justin's session had an attendance of elementary - high school students. The way the students instantly engaged themselves with Justin was awesome. I was truly surprised and expected that the younger students would have some reservations on being open and honest, however they were ready to engage in the topic and posed questions and voiced their opinions. Justin started the forum by going to UrbanDictionary.com and searching the definitions of "Holla" and "Holla Back". He also searched other popular terms that our youth used and made the connection that we really need to know the meaning behind our words when we are communicating, because words do have power. It was astonishing to see that the youth really didn't even know the meaning behind all of these words and slang that they use every day. They also discussed the disconnection and of the generations (Baby Boomers vs. Generation Y).

I think overall this was an awesome experience and although my purpose was to support and volunteer, I learned a lot and was glad I had the chance and opportunity to be involved in the many ways that I was with BMDS. It really kept with my mission and why I place much importance on stewardship and volunteering. It is not about just volunteering, it is about the lives we affect and impact with each event.

Check out some images we captured:

<img style="cursor:pointer; Manly because I never found the time nor had the creative juices flowing to place pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. Each year, since the idea of ZalGuya Occasions, LLC came into existence (since March 2008), I saw my dream become clearer-each year I have new goals for my future with this company. I went from simply wanting to plan events to just recently developing my niche and seeing what it is about this that I love...(EVERYTHING!) Being a Tourism and Hospitality Student at Temple University helps with putting my visions and dreams into focus tremendously. (That's my own personal shout!) I have been attempting to get a college degree since 2001 (H.S. Graduation) and to say I am FINALLY a College Senior is something I am proud of.

Going into my Senior Status (even though I have two more years ahead of me), I feel accomplished to an extent (or up to this point; but i have not in any way completed or finished my journey). I felt real good ending this semester because this is the FIRST time in my academic career that I had FOUR A's and ONE B on my report!! (actual grades: A, A-, A-, A-, B-). Needless to say I also work full time, volunteer as much as I can, and had an event every month from January 2010 - April 2010 (except for March). So when I say "Ultimate Success is in YOUR Control", I am speaking from my experience.

There are many key factors that attribute to success, achieving your goals and dreams, etc. And I am in NOOO way shape or form an expert NOR have I achieved ultimate success NOR am I at a point where I want to be personally, in my career or with my business. But I am learning, absorbing and applying the knowledge I learn everyday, which allows me to say that I am and "Expert in Training" and a "Successor in Training" (even if it is at a novice level). Knowledge and Constantly retaining information is sooo important to become successful.

I just completed a book by entrepreneur called "The Hustler's Ten Commandments" and Hotep detailed each commandment with a real life situation & tips to live by (like "Your Network is your net worth"). This book was an easy read, however it is one of those books that you will always have throughout your life and career. I am glad that I had to read it at this point in my life because it actually increased my fire and desire to start blogging again! (So thanks Hotep!)

Personal note: Keep living on purpose; reading opens doors that would normally be non-existent.

There are tons of people (experts, gurus, and successor's) that pour out knowledge and information so that WE (us in training) can become the best YOU! Well this blog will be no different. Event planning is what I love. Being socially aware/conscious is what God has called me to do. Through Volunteering, ZalGuya in the Community can become a part of the solution of change in the city of Philadelphia. Through professionalism, dedication, precision, and with thorough attention to detail ZalGuya Occasions, LLC can and will become a sustainable & reputable event planning company.
Do you know why? Because I have a vision, the talent, and the drive and lastly because MY Success is in MY Control!!

As always...

Keep God 1st.
Be the best you, God only made one for a reason.
Give back because someone gave to you to get where you are.

****Zalika W.****

ZGO's Planning for the future:

... May 15th, 2010 was the Black Male Development Symposium at Arcadia University. Pictures says THOUSANDS of words!!! (stay tuned)
Subscribe in a reader

ZalGuya in the Community

2 months left of summer and here is what we are doing... won't you JOIN us!!

July 12, 2009
The American Cancer Bike-A-Thon Philadelphia
Ben Franklin Bridge
5am-11am
To volunteer please sign up at: http://community.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=17890&pg=entry (register as an individual then select volunteer)

July 18, 2009
Variety Club a Children's Charity Fundraiser Car Wash
Run A Round
1351 Easton Road
Roslyn, PA 19001
To volunteer please sign up at: http://www.zalguyaoccasions.com/volunteer_contact.php
9am-4pm

July 1st - September 1, 2009
Clothing Drive for the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission
We will be collecting men's, women's and children's clothing. There are many things that can be done to save costs when planning, decorating and having an event. Some might think that in order to cut cost or save money you must decide to have something or not to have something. Well most times that just is not true. There are always cheaper versions of something and an item can always be substituted for something more cost effective. For an example, instead of having an open bar at your event, you can save money by having a cocktail hour where there are only two to three specialty drinks and if your guests request something other than those specialty drinks, they would have to pay for it. Or you can decide to have a cash bar or run a tab and once the tab is maximized, a cash bar would come into effect. You shouldn't have to break the bank when having an event.

Here are some ZalGuya Occasions' tips to cut costs and not your visions:

Tip #1: Real Flowers vs Silk Flowers?

SILK FLOWERS

Silk flowers can save you hundreds of dollars and can be used time and time again. Although real flowers look amazing, silk flowers can have the same look and you won’t have to bother your guests with any allergies from the real flowers. Also, you can surprise your guests with the beautiful display as a gift. Silk flowers also will always stand up tall and look fully bloomed. Which real flowers can be disappointing at times because they are wilting or they have not fully bloomed. You can get arrangements of silk flowers from a flower retailer or you can arrange them yourself. Michaels and A.C. Moore are great stores to visit in search for arrangements. They also, almost all the time have coupons and discounts on their store items. This weekend Michaels have a 50% off (off 1 item) discount. Although it might take time to create these arrangements, you will also save money.

Tip #2: Invitations: New School vs Old School?

New School

Today's day and age there are many creative ways to send invitations to any event. You can have the classic paper invitation or get creative and send your invitation in a school box (for a back to school jam) or in a bottle (for a destination wedding). Now the more cost effective invitation is the E-VITE. Evites are invitations that are sent via email. These invitations can have many looks and be sent all over the world instantly and the best thing about it is that it is free! Evite.com allows you to create and personalize your evite with pictures, fonts, colors, backgrounds and anything that fits your creative style. You can add music to your evite, set a limit on your guests and their guests, add a payment option (through paypal), display items for your guests to bring and your guests are able to personalize their responses. You can always make changes and you have the option of notifying your guests with the changes. Evites are great! I would recommend using evites for any occasion.

Tip #3: DJ vs Ipod?

Both

I am a huge fan of hiring a DJ for an occasion, however this route can also be costly. Ipods are a great way to save when on a tight budget. The plus of Ipods is that you always hear music that you want to hear. Your music selection can be endless. Ipods only require the music and a dock hooked up to a sound system. The down side to this is that you can't make those song requests, there will not be anyone who verbally encourages the occasion. Music is a major factor that can make or break an Occasion. It keeps the tempo of the event and keeps the guests engaged in having a good time. Choosing between DJ and Ipods can be a difficult, but please do not short yourself on the music!!

These are just a few of the tips that can help you cut cost, but not cut in on your vision. It takes work to plan a successful Occasion. There are many resources that can guide you to great ideals, deals, and tips. Just remember to Cut cost and not your vision!

Happy Planning~
Zalika (Owner of ZalGuya Occasions, LLC)
Subscribe in a reader

Is winter a good time for weddings?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hX7_W6Y_20w/SYp0RX5KYDI/AAAAAAAAARI/0Ta-Zkvdv3M/s400/pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299175753375178802" />

Imagine this....

Its in the middle of February and it is your wedding day. Now the night before, your town was hit with a snow storm and received around 3-4 inches of snow. On your wedding day the sun was out, but it was dead winter so it was cold and it was 3-4 inches of snow on the ground. You proceeded to get ready and go through the motions of your big day. You are dressed and are ready to get the show on the road! Your photographer is in the living room waiting for you to come down, to take some before pictures of you in the house, with your folks and with your bridesmaids. You look outside and exhale because you do not understand why it had to snow on this day! YOUR DAY! But your mother or maid of honor assures you that everything will be ok. The snow is the canvas and you (the bride) are the masterpiece!

So you proceed to the chapel and become amazed that even with the snow, the chapel is full. You see your soon to be husband while walking down the aisle and barely notices all the awwwws.. and sniffles.. you just want to say ID so you and your new husband can take the pictures (why did it have to snow) and get to the reception in one piece.

I dos are said.. bells are rung.. cheers are heard...

You see your bridal party enter their limo to the destination for pictures. You leave the church seeing a carriage like object sitting out front. The contraption sort of looks like Cinderella. Your new husband takes your hand and says "Your chariot awaits". You smile and wave to the folks and get in. To your surprise its warm (oh you are soo thankful its warm). On your ride to the destination for pictures you notice the beautiful scenery. The pure white snow hooving rooftops, trees, cars. It calms you and relaxes you. You get lost in the atmosphere.

Finally you arrive. Time to take pictures!! You proceed to take pictures inside, until the photographer suggests "Why don't we take some shots across the street in the park. Just a few because it IS cold out and dead winter." You look at your husband and you both agree. But you say sternly "2 pictures that's it! I am not becoming a Popsicle bride!"

You and your bridal party go across the street in your gowns and suits and coats and stand in a couple of poses. Then, the photographer mentioned throwing snow in the air (not at you, because you would seriously HURT anyone who messed up that Vera Wang dress and your hair!!)

But, you all begin to have fun and enjoy the snow like you all weren't in your suits and dresses.

You all then go to the reception to really get "the party started".

You couldn't ask for a better wedding, a better time, a more perfect scenery (Snow and all)... Your Winter in Wonderland Wedding!

Imagine your pictures outlined with snow... your beautiful girls and handsome groomsmen, you and your husband... in the mist of it all.. on your wedding day...in the dead of winter! .. Who says winter isn't a good time for weddings??
Subscribe in a reader

Prosperity in 2009

"DO WHAT'S HARD WHILE IT'S EASY."

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 85px; height: 134px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hX7_W6Y_20w/SX_aczh8V3I/AAAAAAAAAQ4/ODNQGWULe7g/s200/images.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296191875214759794" />

I listen to Michael Baisden on our Philadelphia radio station 105.3 WDAS from 3pm to around 4pm (which is the time I leave work). Michael Baisden is a popular author (Men Cry in the Dark, Maintenance Man, etc.) and a radio personality. His radio show "The Michael Baisden Show" consists of him informing his "radio family" and he empowers the community. On Tuesday he made a comment quoting Wisdom of the Ages "Do what's hard while it's easy". I had to write that down.

This simply means that don't wait until you lost your job or you are in a bad situation to prosper or start your path to prosperity. Instead work towards starting your own business or reaching your goals while you have income or savings and have the financial resources to do so. This is soo important because if you wait to get that revelation that you want to open your own this or that and you find yourself without a steady income; your dreams can be deferred. Furthermore, why should you wait until disaster strikes to "make a move"? MOVE NOW!!! START NOW!!!

So the bottom-line is to START NOW!!!

Start building your business or paving a way for your future while you can.
Set yourself up to leave your present past to your fruitful future!!

"DO WHAT'S HARD WHILE IT'S EASY!"

Zalika
Subscribe in a reader

Behind the vision...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 305px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hX7_W6Y_20w/SXfftZLR8RI/AAAAAAAAANs/ecNQO30CbPE/s320/head+shots+11721.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293945857942614290" />

Since establishing ZalGuya Occasions LLC in March 2008, Zalika's services for social events includes: receptions, anniversaries, birthday celebrations, baby showers, bridal showers, cocktail occasions, bachelor/bachelorette occasions and holiday gatherings. However as a planner, I do not believe that to be necessarily true. Event planners are not for everybody, but they are for most people and here is why:

The purpose of an event planner is to produce events or occasions for social celebrations, corporations, and/or non-profit organizations. We are compensated to create events based on the customer’s budget - a realistic budget. Events cannot be planned on nothing, weather you are an event planner or an individual planning your own event. Events = Money - it is the amount of money that is the issue. As a person deciding on contracting an event planner, you should first see if this is an expense that you can afford. Because an event planner must get paid in addition to the expense of the event.

But don't let that simple sentence deter you from their services. The most important statement I will make is - (get a pen and write this down) - EFFICIENT EVENT PLANNERS CAN SAVE YOU MONEY TOWARDS YOUR BOTTOM LINE. This is a fact. An efficient event planner will be able to do the leg work and research for your venue, entertainment, caterer (depending on the planner's policy) and set up of your event. Most event planners have a rapport with other vendors and professionals and will work towards getting the best prices and can make money saving suggestions. If you ever tried to put together any type of event or occasion with no professional help, you most likely have experienced headaches, running around, wasting gas, frustration and some sort of stress to make sure your event was successful. Well wouldn't you want to keep your sanity by leaving it up to someone else?

How do you select an event planner? Good Question!
There are many event planners that provide services across the globe. But deciding on which professional to use should be decided carefully. You would need to see who is in your area (deciding to choose a professional outside your desired event area will lead you to accrue additional fees - for traveling). There are many websites that can assist you in locating a planner. Some sites are www.gatheringguide.com, www.yellowpages.com, www.mypartyplannerusa.com and many many others. Or you can use the most effective method of finding an event planner - WORD OF MOUTH. References are what keep entrepreneurs employed. People always need something and you would be surprised how there is always somebody that knows everybody (sort of speak). So ask around. Asking others could possibly be all the researching you need. This helps you and the event planner!

Now this next step would be for the budget conscious individual. You would then need to narrow down your selection of professionals in your area based on their compensation. Talk to the planners to see their required compensation for the services you are requesting. You can always decide what you are willing to have a planner do. For example - if you want a planner to take control, be prepared to compensate for that service. However if you only require a planner for certain aspects of your event - you will pay for that specific service. Event planners prices vary depending on their own policy, services contracted and/or budget for event. Some can require a percentage of your budget, and hourly rate or a flat fee. Make sure you understand each professional’s policy.

Now you should have found a professional who could provide services for your event and at a price that you could afford. Contracting anyone to do a job will cost you something. But imagine the stress, time, miles, and money you would save by leaving it to the professionals. Have you ever painted a house but wasn't really a painter? And after you finished you seen some imperfections? Or you realized it was a lot of work and time to do the task and contracting a professional painter would have saved you time. Well event planners do the same thing. No we don’t paint houses, but we can lessen the imperfections and save you time (if not money). And frankly time is money. So why not save both? Imagine the reward of contracting the right event professional to produce your next birthday party or wedding or your child's sweet sixteen. Event Planners are a great resource.

Share some of your experiences with event planners?

- Zalika
ZalGuya Occasions LLC
www.zalguyaoccasions.com

(Stay tuned for our next topic titled: Event Planners vs Family Memebers/Friends)
Subscribe in a reader

Animoto - Making memories fun!

I recently read an article in Entrepreneur Magazine about a group of guys who started Animoto. Animoto allows you to upload your pictures...add music and presto... it creates a 30 second video.

So after two days of trying to create a 30 second video for ZalGuya Occasions, I found out that this site is GREAT!!!! It is really easy.. the hardest thing you have to do is decide on which music you want. The pictures are played to the beat of the song. You truly have to see it for yourself. I would recommend that you change the size of your pictures, because the larger they are the longer it takes to download... remember it took me two days...(although I did start and stop)

But nonetheless, I like what this site does. You can also make full length videos and make them DVD quality, but to do this you would need to upgrade which does cost. But if you want to utilize the free 30 seconds you can and you can use songs from your computer as well as the various genres they have listed.

It is also great for commercials. I always thought I would be in a career where children were involved: a teacher, neonatal nurse, or a childcare provider. But when I was ready to "make a move" outside of my 9-5, I realized event planning was what my future held. After realizing what it was that I not only wanted to do, but could see myself actually doing in my adult years, I took the next step and went back to school. Being an adult and deciding to continue a college education is a task in itself. I finished my first semester with a 3.0 GPA, but it wasn't easy. I also worked a full-time job, in addition to starting ZalGuya Occasions. But I am determined to succeed! I would encourage any adult who is thinking about going back to complete their post-education to do so. One is never too old (or experienced) for college. The way the world is changing and the way technology is taking over, it is almost mandatory to get a college degree just to stay updated with the basics. So if you have been thinking about it and aren't sure when you should start or if you know you want to go but are making excuses about why you haven't started - make that your resolution for the new year. 2009 Resolution: Registering for the summer semester or the fall 2009 semester. Remember nothing is stopping you from doing what you want to do - but you. We tend to talk ourselves out of everything. I just watched a v-blog on Facebook.com from an old classmate of mine and he said his resolution for 2009 was "Anything I think of I'm going to do it" (B. Davis). If we all followed this same mentality just imagine the progress we would make in our lives. Even if your destiny isn't to own your own company, or magazine, or clothing store - we all should aspire to become the best in whatever it is we are destined to be. Start taking control of your destiny!! Plan for your future in 2009!! ZalGuya Occasions LLC is my future!
